Car insurance policyholders ‘affected by windscreen shortage’

6 May, 2010

Car insurance policyholders are being affected by a shortage of windscreens which has occurred as a result of the high demand for replacement glass at the beginning of the year.

This is according to Auto Windscreens, which reports that glazing companies throughout the UK are struggling to get hold of parts, leading to long delays for car insurance policyholders looking to get their windows replaced.

Particularly affected are owners of Vauxhall Zafiras, Astras and Vectras, VW Passats and Golfs, and Audi A4s.

Auto Windscreens has, as a result, increased production of glass by more than 40 per cent at its own factory to more than 600 windscreens a day.

“It’s unusual to have a national shortage of windscreens and we’ve certainly not come across it before,” said Nigel Davies, sales and marketing director at the company.

The firm recently reported that the introduction of new technology had caused windscreen replacement costs to rise by as much as 68 per cent in ten years.
