Extra training for car insurance holders ‘should be incentivised’

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has called on the government to incentivise further driver training with tax breaks for car insurance policyholders.

In its Road Safety Manifesto for the upcoming election, the IAM has called on political parties to promote driver and rider improvement.

The organisation said that a lifelong approach to learning was the “single biggest factor” that could benefit road safety.

“Human error is the biggest cause of crashes, so improving driver ability is the best way to deliver real reductions in road deaths and injuries,” said Simon Best, chief executive of the IAM.

It recommended incentives for car insurance policyholders undertaking further training, like tax breaks and vehicle excise duty discounts.

The IAM said that younger and older drivers, motorcyclists and business motorists are the groups that would benefit the most from further instruction.

A recent poll by the organisation found that 68 per cent of people believe mandatory re-testing of car insurance policyholders over the age of 70 would benefit road safety.
