Leicester’s motor insurance policyholders to test hydrogen car
A hydrogen fuel-cell powered vehicle is soon to be tested on UK roads by the public for the first time, according to the Press Association.
Thirty of the cars, developed by small British manufacturer Riversimple, will be leased to motorists in Leicester from early 2012.
The two-seater prototype has a top speed of 50mph and can travel as far as 200 miles on a single tank of hydrogen.
Hugo Spowers, the company’s founder, told the news provider that the era of eco-friendly transport had arrived.
He said: “The age of fossil-fuelled cars may not be over yet but it is surely dying. Contrary to what we usually hear, sustainable, near pollution-free transport is possible, here and now, using existing technology.”
Last month, research by tyre manufacturer Michelin revealed that poor tyre pressure maintenance in the UK wastes 370 million litres of fuel each year, costing motorists in excess of £440 million.
