Young motor insurance policyholders admit to speeding

30 June, 2010

A new survey has revealed that many younger car insurance policyholders regularly drive above the speed limit, particularly when they have friends in the vehicle with them.

More than half of respondents claimed to have been a passenger of a young driver travelling at more than 40mph in a 30-zone, or faster than 70mph on a country road, according to safety group Brake.

One in five of the 2,800 participants, all aged 14-25, admitted to racing on a public road, as a driver or passenger, while one in ten confessed to overtaking other vehicles at speed.

Ellen Booth, Brake campaigns officer, said: “Many young people get a thrill from driving fast with their friends in the car, but because of the way young people’s brains develop, they often don’t yet have the ability to control their thrill-seeking tendencies.”

Earlier this week, a separate survey, conducted by insurance firm esure, found that a quarter of Britain’s male drivers do not wear a seatbelt while driving.
